About Our Club

Welcome!

The men and women who make up the membership of the Athens Lions Club want to take this opportunity to let you know what our organization is all about.

The Athens Lions Club was chartered in April of 1946 to serve the Athens, Ohio community. We are affiliated with Lions Clubs International, which comprises the largest organization of civic minded individuals in the world. There are currently over 1.6 million Lions in more than 170 countries or geographic areas around the world. Our Motto is: "We Serve".

Fund Raising:

As with any civic minded group, the Athens Lions Club has monetary needs that make possible our continued support of various local, regional, and international projects.

During the course of our fiscal year the Athens Lions Club raises money through a number of annual and on-going events. These events include:

* Operation of our food booth at the Athens County Fair.
* Hosting of our annual Arts & Crafts Show on Ohio University's Mom's Weekend.
* Charity Newsies.
* The Sale of Lions Club Mints.

Local Projects:

The Athens Lions Club actively supports many projects on the local level. Our local projects include such things as:

* Scholarships for new graduates of Athens High School to attend Ohio University or Hocking College.
* Sponsorship of local boy's and girl's sports teams.
* Provide funds for eye examinations and the purchase of eye glasses for members of the Athens Community who cannot afford them.
* In conjunction with the City of Athens, provide funding for improvements to Athen's Southside Park. Including the design and construction of a covered bridge to enhance access to the park. Also, we have funded considerable additions to the playground equipment in the park.
* Annually donate to O'Bleness Hospital for eye surgical equipment.
* Annually make funds available for youth summer camp for disabled children.
* Provide funds for the appearance of Eddie Eyeglasses in the Morrison, East, and West Elementary schools in Athens.
* Provided initial funding to establish the Lion's Quest drug abuse prevention program in the Athens Middle School.
* Perform glaucoma screening within the community.
* Annually offer partial sponsorship of an Athens High School Student to the Ohio Lions All-State Band.
* We have provided funds to the Southeastern Ohio Regional Foodbank.
* We have provided funds to the Athens County Chapter of the American Red Cross.
* We have provided funds to My Sisters Place shelter for women.
* We have provided funds to Good Works Shelter.
* We have provided funds to the Boy and Girl Scouts.
* We have provided funds to Habitat for Humanity.
* The Athens Lions Club is a member of the Athens Chamber of Commerce.

Regional and International Projects:

The Athens lions Club also participates in or donates to many regional and international projects. Among these project are:

* The transportation of donated tissues and organs to the Central Ohio Lions Eyebank in Columbus, Ohio for use in transplants.
* We collect used eyeglasses for distribution throught the Amigos program to those who cannot afford them in South America.
* We provide support to the American Diabetes Association through an annual service day project.
* We rovide funding to the Ohio Pilot Dogs program.
* Provide funding to the Central Ohio Lions Eyebank.
* Provide funding for eye research to the Ohio Lions Eye Research Foundation.

Membership:

If you are interested in making a difference in our community, then consider joining the Athens Lions Club. We are always looking members who are willing to work to make our community a better place to work, live, and play.

Membership, which is by invitation only, is open to all 18 years old and over regardless of race, sex, or creed. If you would like to know more, please consider attending one of our meetings. They are held on the first and third Tuesdays of each month. Currently, they take place at the Ponderosa Steak House located at the East State Street Mall. Dinner is at 5:30 PM and our meeting begins at 6:30 PM.
